First Aid

Overview
First Aid is a 20 hour course that gives you the practical skills to respond calmly and correctly in an emergency, before professional medical help arrives. You will practice cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), learn how to control bleeding and treat wounds, and work through the correct response to shock, burns, fractures, choking and poisoning.
The course also covers less common but important situations, including heat and cold related emergencies, water rescue, and how to support someone through a stroke or a severe allergic reaction, so you leave prepared for a wide range of real situations.
What You Will Learn
- Assess a scene for safety and recognize a life threatening emergency
- Perform CPR and use an automated external defibrillator (AED)
- Control bleeding and properly dress and bandage a wound
- Recognize and respond to shock, burns, fractures and choking
- Respond to common medical emergencies such as seizures, severe allergic reactions and diabetic emergencies
- Provide first aid for heat and cold related injuries and for stroke
- Apply the correct first aid response for pediatric and infant emergencies
- Communicate and coordinate effectively with emergency response teams

| Bleeding and Wound Care | Controlling bleeding through direct pressure, and wound dressing and bandaging | 1 hour |
| Shock and Burns | Recognizing and treating shock, and first aid for burns | 1 hour |
| Fractures, Muscle and Joint Injuries | Recognizing and immobilizing fractures, and treating strains and sprains | 1 hour |
| Common Medical Emergencies | Recognizing conditions such as seizures, severe allergic reactions and diabetic emergencies, and providing first aid | 1 hour |
| Heat and Cold Related Emergencies | Managing injuries and illness caused by extreme heat or cold | 1 hour |
